THE UNIVERSITY, MEDICAL LIBRARY, AND SCHOOL OF NURSING:  

The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at the University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and over 20 school and department libraries. It
employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the
opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students,
participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff
development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and
manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in
numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library
building, the complete conversion of the Library's catalog, and various
automation projects, which include network access to scholarly information
and digital preservation. 

The Harvey Cushing / John Hay Whitney Medical Library serves the Schools of
Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, the Yale-New Haven Hospital, other Yale
affiliates.  The Yale School of Nursing supports a collection of
high-demand nursing materials in a School-based library, with plans to
incorporate a state-of-the-art digital library and electronic nursing
curriculum at the School location.  The majority of nursing print resources
are being relocated in the summer of 2000 to the Medical Library to provide
centralized access and expanded hours of service, as well as to unite
clinical and academic nursing information resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Nursing Librarian is a reference position with
responsibility for the Yale School of Nursing student, faculty, and
administrative communities. Duties for the Nursing Librarian include:
School of Nursing reader assistance at both the School of Nursing and
Medical Library; nursing library educational program development; nursing
student and faculty library training at appropriate usage points, including
faculty offices, computer labs, and library workstations; production of
nursing information usage guides; development of the School of Nursing and
Medical Library's web sites; selection responsibilities for print,
electronic, and internet nursing resources.  The Nursing Librarian will
also work in concert with the Clinical Support Librarian to support
information needs and training for the nursing community of Yale-New Haven
Hospital. 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: As a member of the Medical Library Reference
Services Department, the Nursing Librarian functions in a collegial,
teamwork-oriented environment which includes both a customer service
philosophy and anticipation of user concerns and demands for exemplary
library reference and research services. Participation in Medical Library
information desk staffing, educational programming, and planning is
required. Participation in Nursing School, Medical Library, and Yale
University Libraries committees and task forces is required. The Nursing
Librarian reports to both the Head of Reference Services for the
Cushing/Whitney Medical Library and the Associate Dean for
Academic Affairs for the Yale School of Nursing.

QUALIFICATIONS: M.L.S. from an ALA-accredited library school and a minimum
of two years experience in an academic health sciences library. Experience
with library resources for nurses and/or nursing students.  Emphasis on
public services library training and experience. Excellent communication
and interpersonal skills; strong public services orientation.  Must have
the ability to function effectively in a team environment and with a
centralized faculty in a nearby location with perceived barriers of access.
Demonstrated ability in utilizing and instructing in the use of information
technologies, such as hypertext markup language (HTML). 

SALARY AND BENEFITS:  Competitive salary, based upon the successful
