THIS POSITION IS FIXED WITH A DURATION OF ONE YEAR FROM DATE OF HIRE.
THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY:
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and
research at University, has more than 10 million volumes housed in the
Sterling Memorial Library and over 20 school and department libraries and
two low-use shelving facilities. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff
of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber
of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in
other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources,
from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of
electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The
Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of
the main library building, the complete conversion of the Library's
catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to
scholarly information and digital preservation.
THE LAW LIBRARY AND UNIVERSITY
The Lillian Goldman Law Library with a collection of over one million
volumes and volume equivalents houses one of the world's finest collections
of printed legal materials. It is located in spectacularly renovated
facilities within the heart of the Yale Law School complex, and serves the
legal research needs of the Law School and University communities. Its
collections are complemented by access to a growing array of online
sources, as well as the strong interdisciplinary collections of more than
10 million print volumes housed nearby at more than twenty other campus
libraries, including the Sterling Memorial Library and the Beinecke Rare
Book and Manuscript Library. Its recently completed renovation project
has enabled the library to more fully support the needs of twenty-first
century legal researchers by integrating access to print and online sources
throughout a its striking facility, and the Law Library is a leader in its
use of technology.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Reference Librarian at the Lillian Goldman Law Library is responsible
for significant public services tasks in a dynamic and challenging
environment. The Law Library serves the faculty and students of a
research-oriented law school with a strong tradition of interdisciplinary
scholarship, as well as other researchers from the larger scholarly and
legal communities.
Reporting to the Head of Reference, this position is designed to introduce
an ambitious career-motivated librarian into the work environment of a
highly regarded academic law library. It is ideal for experienced law
librarians interested in making a switch to academic law libraries or for
newer law librarians interested in pursuing a career as an academic law
librarian.
Essential duties of the position include: providing reference assistance to
users of the Law Library; participating in the first year legal research
instruction program, as well as other instructional programs; creating and
maintaining guides and providing publicity for use of the Library and
materials in print and electronic forms; and preparing bibliographies,
library exhibits and other current awareness services. Additional duties
may include participating in projects relating to the government documents
collection, microforms and audio visual materials, including collection
development; participating in content development and maintenance of the
library's web site; and participating in collection development
responsibilities for print, electronic, and Internet resources. The
incumbent also is expected to participate in library planning, committees
and task forces and to participate in campus, regional, and national
professional development and collaborative activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires an M.L.S. or equivalent from an ALA-accredited
library school and a J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school; however,
professional experience in a law library may substitute for a J.D.
Library training and experience should demonstrate an emphasis on public
services work, experience using microcomputers and information productivity
applications, and an ability to function in a collegial, teamwork oriented
environment which emphasizes customer service and delivery of exemplary
library reference and research services.
The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, possess superior
communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrate a strong public
services orientation and an ability to work with varied user groups, be
able to function effectively in a team environment, be able to use and
instruct in computer applications for legal research, including LEXIS,
WESTLAW and the World Wide Web, and have an awareness of current trends in
legal research and legal education.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Competitive salary and rank, based upon the successful candidate's
qualifications and experience. Full benefits package including 22 vacation
days; 17 holiday, recess and personal days; comprehensive healthcare;
