THE UNIVERSITY AND THE
LIBRARY
The Yale University Library, which is a highly valued partner
in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million
volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and
department libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly
600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of
faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other
areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from
rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of electronic
resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library
is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the
main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the
Library's catalog, and various automation projects, which include network
access to scholarly information and preservation imaging. Yale is a
member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to the
NACO and BIBCO Programs.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The librarian will perform original cataloging and associated
authority control. Will enhance and maintain cataloging records,
using a catalogers’ workstation, for a wide range of materials in all
formats and in different languages, for the Social Science Libraries and
Information Services, including the Economic Growth Center, the Social
Science Data Archive and the Government Documents and Information
Center. Trains and supervises library assistants who perform copy
cataloging. Serves as a liaison to an assigned academic department in the
Social Sciences. Participates in collection development and
management, reference and research services, and instruction.
Participates in the management and policy decisions at SSLIS as a team
member. Provides weekend and evening reference service on a
rotating basis. May serve as a member of Library wide
committees. Is expected to be active professionally.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school. At least two years
professional cataloging experience with OCLC, RLIN or other online
library system. Appointment at Level III requires five years of
professional experience. Demonstrated professional accomplishments
appropriate to the rank. Familiarity with AACR2, Library of Congress rule
interpretations and subject heading practice, descriptive cataloging
rules, MARC format and authority control standards and trends. Reading
knowledge of one or more Western European languages. Subject knowledge of
the social sciences. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to
work independently and with others as a team in a rapidly changing and
demanding environment. Strong public service orientation.
Preferred: Experience in cataloging government documents and/or serials;
Experience in working with Marcive records; Advanced degree in one of the
social sciences; Experience in collection development, government
documents or business reference service, and/or bibliographic instruction
in an academic library; Supervisory experience, including hiring,
training, evaluating and supervising the work of staff and monitoring
productivity and quality of work.
