Unsolicited strange emails.

We've had several staff members receive email this week from email
addresses that look like this:

yess@ms50.hinet.net
kaa@ms2.hinet.net

The email looks to be garbage (there are just jumbled characters on the
screen), actually, it appears to be in a character set that Eudora cannot
display correctly (big-5 which is used to display Chinese). This email is
spam, there is an URL attached, I would not recommend you click on it.

If you get one of these messages, or any unsolicited email message you should:

-Delete it.
-*Do Not Reply to it*. That lets the sender know they have reached a valid
email address, it is highly doubtful they will care to delete your address
from their spamming list. More likely they will just add your address to
more spammng lists.
-Do not go to the URL included.
-If you find the message offensive, you can forward it to abuse@yale.edu,
however it is very difficult for them to do anything about such spam,
especially when it originates overseas.

You can set up filters in Eudora so that such messages are automatically
trashed, if you'd like help doing so, please contact your departmental
expert user.

If you have any questions, please ask.
