THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 16 school and departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale' s distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged in numerous ambitious projects such as the renovation of the main library building, the complete retrospective conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects, which include network access to scholarly information and preservation imaging.


RESPONSIBILITIES
The Yale University Library seeks a committed and energetic subject specialist to serve the teaching and research needs of students and faculty associated with the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures and to participate in serving the broader research and instructional needs of all faculty and students.  Reporting to the Head of Research Services and Collections, the incumbent develops and maintains print and digital collections for languages and literatures in German, Dutch, and the Scandinavian languages. Serves as professional liaison to faculty in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. Plans, promotes, and implements library instructional programs for undergraduates, graduates, and faculty of the German Department. Also participates in the general library instruction programs and programs for large undergraduate classes sponsored by Research Services and Collections. Provides general reference service to patrons in person, through email, and over the telephone.  Serves on library committees, working groups, and task forces, and is expected to be professionally active.


QUALIFICATIONS
MLS from an ALA-accredited library school OR relevant professional experience in a research library required. Advanced degree in German literature or related field required, preferably a Ph.D. Appointment at a level above the Librarian I requires demonstrated professional accomplishments, and a minimum of two, five, or eight years of relevant professional experience for appointment at the Librarian II, III or IV level, respectively. Excellent reading and speaking knowledge of German required.  Knowledge of another Western European language also required, preferably a Scandinavian language.  Demonstrated familiarity with information technologies and a high degree of computer literacy. Demonstrated commitment to public service. Excellent teaching skills preferred. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative environment.

Competitive salary and rank are based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
