THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,

THE EAST ASIA
LIBRARY Yale University’s East Asia Library is one of the finest collections
of East Asian materials in the U.S. and contains over 650,000 volumes of
books and bound periodicals, of which 410,000 are in Chinese, 230,000 in
Japanese, and 10,000 in Korean. The Library supports an active community
of scholars on a campus where East Asia is the largest area studies
program. To complement this distinguished collection, the Library is now
developing plans to expand and enhance reference and instructional
services for faculty, graduates students and undergraduates. For

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Curator of the East Asia Library, the
Associate Curator of the Chinese Collections is responsible for the
selection of Chinese language materials in all formats for Sterling
Memorial Library and other libraries in the Yale University Library, as
required. The Associate Curator provides expert advice to faculty,
graduate students, and undergraduates through reference consultations and
actively collaborates with the Public Services Librarian to support
bibliographic instruction and reference activities. The Associate
Curator also works closely with individual faculty members to respond to
programmatic needs. The Associate Curator manages the Chinese
Collections budget and vendor relations and supervises and provides
training for an acquisitions unit of two full-time support staff and
part-time student workers. The Associate Curator is also involved
in donor relations, gift and exchanges, preservation and conservation
issues, and other activities relevant to the Chinese Collections
including cooperating closely with the Cataloging Coordinator and
cataloging staff within the East Asia Library and with other departments
within Yale University Library, as necessary. The Associate Curator
also participates actively in setting priorities, policies and procedures
within the East Asia Library. Librarians in the Yale University
Library are also expected to be active in local library committees and in
relevant national level organizations.
QUALIFICATIONS An MLS from an ALA-accredited library OR an advanced degree in a
subject area relevant to the study of China plus relevant library
experience is required. Native or near native fluency, both
spoken and written, in Chinese (modern and classical) is required.
Excellent oral and written communication skills are required. The
ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative environment and
excellent interpersonal skills are also required.
Demonstrated professional accomplishments and a minimum of five years of
professional experience are required for appointment at the Librarian III
level, demonstrated professional accomplishments and a minimum of eight
years for appointment as Librarian IV. The following qualifications
are preferred: an advanced degree in a subject area relevant to
East Asian Studies (for those with the M.L.S), familiarity with
electronic resources and reference tools for Chinese studies, knowledge
of scholarly trends in Chinese studies, familiarity with the Chinese book
trade, supervisory and/or managerial experience, and an understanding of
on-line library acquisitions systems.
SALARY AND BENEFITS Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful
candidate's qualifications and experience. Full benefits package
