THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching

in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental

THE BEINECKE RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT
LIBRARY The Beinecke Library, with one of the world’s largest buildings
devoted entirely to rare books and manuscripts, is Yale's principal
repository for literary archives, early manuscripts, and rare books. The
Beinecke collections are internationally known and heavily used by
scholars from around the world. In addition to its distinguished general
collections, the Beinecke Library houses outstanding special collections
devoted to American literature, German literature, Western Americana, and
the Osborn Collection, noted for its British literary and historical

RESPONSIBILITIES The Yale Library seeks an experienced computer support specialist to
provide automation support at the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript
Library. The successful candidate will participate in planning,
implementation and operation of a variety of hardware and software
running on the Microsoft Windows 2000 platform. The current supported
network protocols are TCP/IP and NetBEUI. The current hardware
configuration consists of 100 pentium-class workstations and five
servers. The Workstation Support Specialist II reports to the Beinecke
Library Systems Officer.
Install systems and reconfigure existing systems as necessary to
accommodate and integrate new or updated software and services.
Troubleshoot workstation hardware and software problems, in person and
over the telephone. Maintain a thorough knowledge of
micro-computing and networking technologies. Maintain a thorough
knowledge of specific computing and networking applications in the
library, such as word processing, email, spreadsheets, the on-line public
access catalog, various Internet tools and database applications.
Track industry developments and recommend the purchase of new
hardware/software and other appropriate solutions. Produce
documentation oriented to non-technical users and conduct one-on-one and
group training sessions. Develop and implement independent
projects, which may include the design and development of Microsoft
Access and other databases and applications. Interact with external
contacts, such as staff in the Library Systems Office, other University
departments, and vendors to get information on new products, for
assistance in the resolution of technical problems, to collaborate and
exchange information and to keep abreast of new developments.
Participate in the support of Windows 2000 servers and related
equipment. Maintain equipment inventories. Serve on
automation related committees in the library and University as
necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree and one year of relevant workstation and networking
experience, or an equivalent combination of education and
experience. Experience with the Windows NT or Windows 2000
operating systems. Understanding of networks and networking
protocols. Strong service orientation and excellent analytical and
organizational skills. Excellent oral and written communication
skills, particularly a demonstrated ability to conduct technical training
sessions and prepare appropriate documentation. Demonstrated
ability to work well independently and with others in a rapidly changing
and demanding environment. Preferred: Familiarity with JavaScript,
VBScript. Experience with HTML, XML, CGI, VBA.
