THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged
in numerous ambitious projects such as completion of retrospective
conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects,
which include network access to scholarly information and preservation
imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and

SOUTHEAST ASIA COLLECTION, STERLING MEMORIAL LIBRARY
The Southeast Asia Collection is one of the major historical
collections of Southeast Asian material in the United States. It plays an
essential role in the University's distinguished Southeast Asian Studies
program, and is responsible for the selection, acquisition and cataloging
of library materials from Southeast Asia; including material in the
Burmese, Thai, Lao, Khmer, Vietnamese, Malay/Indonesian and Tagalog
languages. The Southeast Asia Collection also provides research services
relating to Southeast Asian Studies. The Collection staff numbers two
full-time librarians, two full-time classified staff members, and two to
three student employees. Each of these student employees works
approximately 10 hours a week. For additional information on the

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general direction of the Southeast Asia Collection Curator,
the Catalog Management Coordinator is responsible for managing the daily
operations of the Southeast Asia Collection catalog unit, a subsection of
the Southeast Asia Collection. Descriptive cataloging is performed
in accordance with national standards and the requirements of Yales local
on-line system and RLIN. Cataloging is performed in RLIN and catalog
records include romanized Southeast Asian language bibliographic
information.
Supervisory responsibilities include hiring, training, evaluating,
disciplining, and supervising the work of staff and monitoring
productivity and quality of work. Provide cataloging for a wide
range of print and non-print Southeast Asian language material.
Provide original and complex copy cataloging for a wide range of print
and non-print material. Manage and supervise the work of Southeast
Asia Collection staff currently engaged in a variety of activities
associated with original and copy cataloging of vernacular and western
language material originating in Southeast Asia. Keep abreast of
revisions in cataloging rules and trends, and applies new rules,
interpretations, and techniques as appropriate. Assist in assuring
that appropriate quality control, problem resolution, routine
maintenance, and other work procedures are developed, documented,
implemented, evaluated, and revised as necessary. Participate in
planning for and implementation of changes in work organization and
procedures; work closely with appropriate Library staff in the
identification and resolution of problems that affect the Library
catalog; and serve on Library-wide committees and task forces. Attend
professional conferences as appropriate. Perform a variety of
administrative tasks including gathering, maintaining, and analyzing
statistics. Create and maintain paper and machine-readable project
files. Provide feedback to identify opportunities for service
quality improvement to internal and external customers.
QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree and three years of related experience or an
equivalent combination of education and experience. Spoken and
written fluency in one or more of the major languages of Southeast Asia
(Burmese, Thai, Lao, Khmer, Vietnamese, Malay/Indonesian or
Tagalog). Familiarity with AACR2, Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations and subject heading practice, MARC 21. Experience
with bibliographic services such as RLIN and OCLC services and
networked-based tools. Supervisory experience, including hiring,
training, evaluating, and supervising the work of staff and monitoring
productivity and quality of work. Experience documenting work
procedures and training others in those procedures. Experience in
Library technical services and with a bibliographic database.
Preferred: Previous cataloging experience, experience with Southeast
Asian romanization systems, knowledge of Southeast Asian history, culture
and scholarship.
Excellent analytical and problem solving skills. Excellent oral and
written communication skills. Proven project management skills.
Demonstrated ability to work independently, exercise responsibility, and
produce results. Ability to manage a variety of tasks and multiple
priorities. Logical and enthusiastic approach to work; careful
attention to detail; initiative and follow-through in equal
measure. Computer skills, including experience with personal
computer software.
