THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY

THE EAST ASIAN COLLECTION
Yale University’s East Asia Library is one of the finest collections of East Asian materials in the U.S.and contains over 650,000 volumes of books and bound periodicals, of which 410,000 are in Chinese, 230,000 in Japanese, and 10,000 in Korean. RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Curator of the East Asia Library, the Librarian for the Japanese Collection is responsible for the selection of Japanese language materials in all formats for Sterling Memorial Library and other libraries in the Yale University Library, as required.  The librarian provides expert advice to faculty, graduate students, and undergraduates through reference consultations and actively collaborates with the Public Services Librarian to support bibliographic instruction and reference activities.  The Librarian also works closely with individual faculty members to respond to programmatic needs.
The Librarian manages the Japanese Collection budget and vendor relations and supervises and provides training for an acquisitions unit of two support staff and part-time student workers.  The Librarian is also involved in donor relations, gift and exchanges, preservation and conservation issues, and other activities relevant to the Japanese Collection including cooperating closely with the Cataloging Coordinator and cataloging staff within the East Asia Library and with other departments within Yale University Library, as necessary.  The Librarian also participates actively in setting priorities, policies and procedures within the East Asia Library.  Librarians in the Yale University Library are also expected to be active in local library committees and in relevant national level organizations.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
An MLS from an ALA-accredited library OR an advanced degree in a subject area relevant to the study of Japan plus relevant library experience is required.   Native or near native fluency, both spoken and written, in Japanese is required. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required.  The ability to work successfully in a highly collaborative environment and excellent interpersonal skills are also required.   The following qualifications are preferred:  an advanced degree in a subject area relevant to East Asian Studies (for those with the M.L.S), familiarity with electronic resources and reference tools for Japanese studies, knowledge of scholarly trends in Japanese studies, familiarity with the Japanese book trade, supervisory and/or managerial experience, and an understanding of online library acquisitions systems.  Demonstrated professional accomplishments and a minimum of two years of relevant professional experience are required for appointment at the Librarian II level, five years of experience and accomplishments for Librarian III, and eight years of experience and accomplishments for Librarian IV.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
