THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees, and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged
in numerous digital initiatives designed to provide access to a full
array of scholarly information. Yale is a member of the Program for
Cooperative Cataloging and contributes to the NACO and BIBCO Programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The Metadata Librarian provides professional expertise and leadership
in the analysis and planning to support the adoption, use, and management
of metadata strategies and tools required to achieve the integrated
access goals in the University Library. Reporting to the Chief
Catalog Librarian, works collaboratively with the Digital Resources
Catalog Librarian, the Library Systems Office Staff, and colleagues
throughout the Library system, to evaluate, adopt, and implement metadata
standards which address the needs of specific user communities and
support the functional requirements of the Library’s electronic
collections of texts, images, special collections, numeric and
audio-visual resources. Interacts with national and international
metadata standards groups in order to represent YUL interests and keep
abreast of and influence current developments.
Establishes Metadata Standards &
Guidelines: Assesses Yale University Library user and
organizational needs and leads the development of criteria and standards
for descriptive, structural and administrative metadata for digital
resources using schemes such as Dublin Core, EAD, MARC, TEI and
VRA. Ensures compatibility with syntax definitions such as SGML,
XML, and semantic rules such as AACR2 and AAPM. Builds crosswalks
between traditional cataloging data structures such as MARC and new
metadata schemes. Analyzes the potential role of new standards in
YUL Digital initiatives.
Coordinates Metadata Production: Responsible
for coordinating the production of MARC and non-MARC metadata for the
life cycle management of digital resources created in the Yale University
environment and for other electronic resources acquired by the Library.
Develops and implements new approaches for creating and manipulating
bibliographic data for digital resources in ORBIS, the online Library
catalog, and
other
platforms. Works with the
Library Systems Office to develop scripts to automate metadata creation
and conversion. Works with fledgling projects to assist
in making good choices in metadata design.
Liaison/Planning: Works closely and
collaboratively with the Digital Resources Catalog Librarian, metadata
creators, subject specialists, library systems staff, users, and staff
engaged in cataloging, to develop standards, establish
processing/cataloging priorities and identify specific functional
requirements. Participates in the strategic planning for projects and
processes with a metadata component. Brings to these discussions a
broad expertise in cataloging and metadata
standards.
Participates in the
development and expansion of digital preservation efforts.
Professional Development: Continues to expand
knowledge of theory and practice of metadata for digital resources.
Monitors metadata and digital resource standards development and
cataloging trends, and informs the Yale Library community about key
developments. Contributes to appropriate professional committees
and to the further development of metadata standards and practices.
Decision Making: Metadata Librarian is free to
coordinate metadata applications and facilitate communication,
discussions, and investigations within the library about metadata
standards and applications. Decisions that depend on participation
of Metadata Librarian: Establish metadata standards, Choice of metadata
schemas for specific digital projects, Participation in national
projects.
Relationships: Digital Resources Catalog Librarian
to coordinate application and implementation of accepted metadata
standards. Library Systems Office staff to develop the
interoperability of various encoding systems and cross-walks.
Cataloging staff, archivists, text and image specialists to develop
standards and cross-walks.
QUALIFICATIONS
Masters of Library Science from an ALA-accredited library science
program or other graduate degree. Minimum of five years of
professional library experience in cataloging and/or metadata. For
appointment as a Librarian IV, minimum of eight years of relevant
professional library experience. Demonstrated expertise in markup
languages (EAD, TEI, SGML, and XML). Knowledge of MARC, AACR2,
Library of Congress Classification and controlled vocabularies
essential. Understanding of Dublin Core, VRA, and additional
current and emerging metadata schema. Experience with library
systems that manage and provide access to digital objects. Ability
to manage a variety of tasks and multiple priorities, and demonstrated
experience developing and implementing effective work routines and
procedures. Logical and enthusiastic approach to work; careful attention
to detail; initiative and follow-through in equal measure. Strong
communication and analytical skills. Ability to work independently and
with others. Ability to excel in a rapidly changing team
environment. Preferred: Demonstrated expertise in developing
XML schema for digital library applications. Understanding of the
OAIS reference model for digital archives and its metadata
components. Experience with implementation of OAI-enabled and
OpenURL-enabled resources.
