THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged
in numerous ambitious projects such as completion of retrospective
conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects,
which include network access to scholarly information and preservation
imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and

THE EAST ASIA LIBRARY
Yale University’s East Asia Library is one of the finest collections
of East Asian materials in the U.S.and contains over 673,000 volumes of
books and bound periodicals, of which 423,000 are in Chinese, 240,000 in
Japanese, and 10,000 in Korean. The Library supports an active community
of scholars on a campus where East Asia is the largest area studies
program. To complement this distinguished collection, the Library
is now developing plans to expand and enhance reference and instructional

RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Curator of the East Asia Library, the
Librarian for the Chinese Collection is responsible for the selection of
Chinese language materials in all formats for Sterling Memorial Library
and other libraries in the Yale University Library, as required.
The Librarian provides expert advice to faculty, graduate students, and
undergraduates through research consultations and actively collaborates
with the Public Services Librarian to support bibliographic instruction
and reference activities. The Librarian also works closely with
individual faculty members to respond to programmatic needs.
The Librarian manages the Chinese collection budget and vendor relations
and supervises and provides training for one acquisitions assistant and
part-time student workers, as necessary. The Librarian is also
involved in donor relations, gift and exchanges, preservation and
conservation issues, web page development, and other activities relevant
to the Chinese collection, including cooperating closely with the
Associate Curator and cataloging staff within the East Asia Library and
with other departments within Yale University Library, as
necessary. The Librarian also participates actively in setting
priorities, policies and procedures within the East Asia.
Librarians in the Yale University Library are also expected to be active
in local library committees and in relevant national level
organizations.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
An MLS from an ALA-accredited library OR an advanced degree in a
subject area relevant to the study of China plus relevant experience is
required. Native or near native fluency, both spoken and
written, in Chinese (modern and classical) is required. Excellent oral
and written communication skills are required. The ability to work
successfully in a highly collaborative environment and excellent
interpersonal skills are also required. The following
qualifications are preferred: an advanced degree in a subject area
relevant to East Asian Studies (for those with the M.L.S), familiarity
with electronic resources and reference tools for Chinese studies,
knowledge of scholarly trends in Chinese studies, familiarity with the
Chinese book trade, supervisory and/or managerial experience, and an
understanding of online library acquisitions systems.
Demonstrated professional accomplishments and a minimum of two years of
relevant professional experience is required for appointment at the
Librarian II level; a minimum of five years of professional experience is
required for appointment at the Librarian III level.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful
candidate's qualifications and experience. Full benefits package
