The past decade has seen the emergence of library assessment as a key part of the process to enable libraries to better support their communities. New assessment tools have been developed that move away from using inputs and outputs to judge service quality and instead develop ways to measure library outcomes and assess value the library adds to the community.

I write to invite you both on behalf of the Service Quality Improvement Council and from personal interest, to a presentation on "Making Library Assessment Work." A visiting colleague and expert in this developing field of librarianship, Steve Hiller, will share information on national activities as well as practical insights from coordinating the highly praised assessment efforts at the University of Washington Libraries.

Making Library Assessment Work:
Practical Approaches for Developing and Sustaining Library Assessment
Tuesday, October 26, 2004
3-4 p.m.
Sterling Memorial Library Room 409

While a wide range of assessment methods and tools are now available, there is growing evidence that many libraries continue to experience difficulty devising appropriate measures or methods, understanding and analyzing the data, using data to make changes, and building a sustainable assessment program. Steve will discuss factors that are important in building sustainable and effective assessment, including examples from libraries that have done so.

Steve has been active in library assessment since 1991 and has published and presented widely in such areas as user needs assessment, qualitative methods, and the use of assessment data in planning and management. This year, Steve and Jim Self, Director, Management Information Services at the University of Virginia, will be working with the Association of Research Libraries on a project to identify a range of practical approaches that can be used to build and sustain effective library assessment.

This program is open to any interested library staff, subject to supervisor approval and coverage of services. Please do not hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about the program.
