Schedule: Full time-37.5 hours per week; Weekdays 8:30-5:00

in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental

THE POSITION
Working in the Integrated Systems and Programming Group of the ILTS
Department, under the direction of the IS&P Production Systems
Manager, the Systems Librarian maintains and enhances the Library’s core
production systems and services, particularly Orbis, the library’s
central management system, and ancillary applications such as LSF/LAS,
MetaLib, SFX, Finding Aids and the Rescue Repository. This work involves
systems development, implementation, upgrade coordination,
troubleshooting, support, training and documentation preparation.
Typically the Systems Librarian is the primary contact for specific
functional units within the library (Access Services, Acquisitions,
Cataloging, or LSF, etc.), and specific systems. The Systems
Librarian is expected to maintain a broad and detailed mastery of core
applications as well as the internal operations of units for which he/she
is the primary contact. This position works closely with key staff
throughout the Library, and with staff in the ITS/Library Group to plan
and coordinate enhancements to our products and special systems-related
projects.
The Systems Librarian participates actively in the Library's management,
assessment, training, and development programs; contributes to
implementing the mission of the Library; serves on Library and University
committees as appropriate; and is active professionally. System
Librarians maintain professional affiliations in appropriate
organizations and keep abreast of the latest developments in integrated
library principles and systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Runs, coordinates and monitors production services ensuring reliable
performance, data integrity, and timely and accurate completion of jobs.
These services include: database loads, extracts, and transfers; the
creation of database analysis and statistical reports; and the
maintenance of application parameter tables.
- Participates in system upgrades, new release installations, and
special projects related to our core systems and services in functional
areas including access services, acquisitions, cataloging, collection
development, ILL, online catalog and the library shelving facility.
Systems Librarians are frequently responsible for overall project
management.
- Prepares specifications for new programs and system enhancements
related to our core applications. Coordinates testing, documentation
creation and training.
- Coordinates the transition of newly implemented systems to production
status.
- Establishes productive relationships with individuals and
organizations at Yale and at other institutions, particularly those using
the same core systems as the Yale Library, in order to advance the
Library’s objectives.
- Serves as an expert resource within the Library regarding core
production systems. Routinely serves on committees and task forces.
QUALIFICATIONS
- MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent
combination of relevant experience and training. Appointment to the rank
of Librarian II requires a minimum of two years of extensive experience
with automated library systems.
- Thorough understanding of MARC. Knowledge of Unicode and other
standards for representation of library information in electronic form
such as METS, MODS, EAD, etc. is desirable.
- Experience with Endeavor’s Voyager ILS highly desirable.
- Project management experience.
- Understanding of library operations.
- Ability to communicate and negotiate effectively with both library
and technical staff.
- Strong organizational skills. Excellent attention to details.
Demonstrated technical aptitude.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to work within a team environment and actively promote
collaboration.
- Preferred: Knowledge of Oracle SQL, Unix, Perl, Voyager, MetaLib,
SFX, RLIN, OCLC, HTML, XML.
