The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, holds over 11 million volumes, as well as numerous other media, housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of staff development. MANUSCRIPTS AND ARCHIVES

Manuscripts and Archives advances teaching and research by making primary source materials available for study and is open to the public.  For over five decades, the department has assembled more than 17,000 linear feet of manuscript collections, donated by individuals and organizations, which document intellectual, legal, social, religious, political, diplomatic, and economic history, and the history of Yale University.  The department also houses the University archives and related materials.  

RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Archivist overseeing the legal processing project, the incumbent will have responsibility for the arrangement of legal collections either already held by Manuscripts and Archives or newly acquired.  The processing project will include arrangement, description, and preservation activities and possible supervision of student assistants.

1. Examines administrative files relating to the provenance of legal collections, analyzes materials to determine content and the appropriate level and type of arrangement and description needed, and develops plans for accomplishing the work, including estimates of resources needed.
2. Responsible for the arrangement and description of legal collections in accordance with approved plans, trains and supervises available support staff and student assistants, screens for potentially sensitive material, weeds extraneous material, recommends appropriate preservation and conservation procedures, and coordinates the copying or reformatting of materials for preservation and access.
3. Prepares a finding aid for processed materials, including a biographical statement, scope and content note, and appropriate listing of materials.
4. Prepares or updates catalog records in accordance with archival and library standards for entry into national and local databases.
5. Assists in initiating and maintaining contact with Yale Law School staff members and possible donors.
6. Assists in packing up and transporting collections.
7. Makes recommendations on personnel selection, staffing requirements, and equipment and supply needs.
      

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
1. Advanced degree in history or related discipline and/or a M.L.S. degree from an ALA-accredited library school and/or law degree.  
2. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  
3. Ability to work effectively in a team setting with administrative, professional and support staff.
4. Ability to lift materials and push heavy book trucks.
Preferred
1. Formal archival training or education and demonstrated knowledge of archival theory and practice.
2. Experience in appraising, arranging, and describing personal papers and/or organizational records.
3. Familiarity with archival automation and description standards.  
4. Course work or research in American legal history.  
5. Supervisory experience.

Rank and competitive salary will be based upon the successful candidate's qualifications and experience.
