A memorial service for Ake Koel
Dear All, especially, dear Old-timers,
There will be a memorial service for Ake Koel at the Whitney Center on
Saturday, May 7th, at 2 p.m. The Whitney (Retirement) Center is at 200
Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, CT, 06517. His old colleagues and friends are
welcome at the memorial service.
Ake Koel worked in the Yale Library from 1969 to 1996. He was head of the
Catalog Department from 1969 to 1974. He served as AUL (Associate
University Librarian) for Technical Services from 1974 to 1986; then AUL of
Planning to 1988. After his (first) retirement, he worked part-time from
1990 to 1996 as the German and Scandinavian bibliographer in Collection
Development. For the rest of his life, he remembered fondly those
post-retirement working years under the leadership of Ann Okerson.
Ake was born on the Island of Saaremas in Estonia. During the war, he fled
to Sweden, then emigrated to Canada. From 1965, he lived, and worked as a
librarian, in the U.S. He died on April 2nd, 2005 at age 85.
He is survived by his wife, Otti Koel, and four grandchildren in Sweden.
