A memorial service for Ake Koel

Dear All, especially, dear Old-timers,

There will be a memorial service for Ake Koel at the Whitney Center on Saturday, May 7th, at 2 p.m. The Whitney (Retirement) Center is at 200 Leeder Hill Drive, Hamden, CT, 06517. His old colleagues and friends are welcome at the memorial service.

Ake Koel worked in the Yale Library from 1969 to 1996. He was head of the Catalog Department from 1969 to 1974. He served as AUL (Associate University Librarian) for Technical Services from 1974 to 1986; then AUL of Planning to 1988. After his (first) retirement, he worked part-time from 1990 to 1996 as the German and Scandinavian bibliographer in Collection Development. For the rest of his life, he remembered fondly those post-retirement working years under the leadership of Ann Okerson.

Ake was born on the Island of Saaremas in Estonia. During the war, he fled to Sweden, then emigrated to Canada. From 1965, he lived, and worked as a librarian, in the U.S. He died on April 2nd, 2005 at age 85.

He is survived by his wife, Otti Koel, and four grandchildren in Sweden.
