Offer is contingent upon successfully passing a background check.
General Purpose:
Under the supervision and guidance of the Assistant Librarian
performs a variety of library support functions including collections
care activities, documentation, public services and technical
services.
Essential Duties:
1. Serving as Reading Room monitor, with duties that include
reader invigilation, checking materials out and in, keeping statistics,
opening and closing the reading room, calling staff to page materials,
and providing basic reference service.
2. Assisting with preparation of collections for digitization,
including writing unique identification numbers on materials, helping
with packing materials for shipment, entering data in excel sheet etc.
3. Documenting digitization in collections records in card or
database format, which includes checking and recording information about
images that have been prepared for digitization and updating information
for those that have been digitized already.
4. Carrying out re-housing and associated documentation of
collections (books and prints), including placing collection materials in
protective enclosures as directed, assisting with measuring for and
assembling boxes as needed, applying labels, noting locations of
collections materials, entering data onto computer, and creating contents
lists as required.
5. Providing support for renovation planning, including
inventorying and sorting; working alone and with other Library staff,
checking library materials and where appropriate relocating volumes based
on size as directed.
6. Assisting with measuring classes of books for shelving planning,
which will entail taking measurements of existing collections materials
to determine linear footage of shelf space occupied by particular classes
of books.
7. Assisting with accessions processing in print room.
8. Sorting archival files.
9. Creating object files, including collecting relevant
information.
10. Perform other duties as required.
Experience and Training:
1. Four years of related
work experience, two of them in the same job family at the next lower
level, and High School level education: or two years of related work
experience and an Associate’s degree: or an equivalent combination of
experience and education.
2. Preferred: Experience in a Special Collections
Library.
3. Preferred: Experience working with historical or graphical
materials.
4. Preferred: A degree in European History, Literature, Art
History or general humanities.
5. Preferred: Library education.
Skills and Abilities:
1. Solid organization skills and attention to detail are
critical.
2. Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills are
required. Ability to work effectively and efficiently with colleagues in
a team environment is essential.
3. Ability to work independently and manage conflicting demands.
4. PC skills, including Windows.
5. References must indicate reliable attendance and punctuality,
accuracy, and attention to detail, consistency and dependability in
performing work assignments and following procedures and diligent
performance.
6. Offer contingent upon successful completion of a background
check.
7. Preferred: Familiarity with Excel and Access.
