THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 10.5 million volumes housed
in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600 FTE
who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of faculty and
students, participate on committees and are involved in other areas of
staff development. A full spectrum of library resources, from rare books
and manuscripts to rapidly expanding network of electronic resources,
constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths. The Library is engaged
in numerous ambitious projects such as completion of retrospective
conversion of the Library's catalog, and various automation projects,
which include network access to scholarly information and preservation
imaging. Yale is a member of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging and

MANUSCRIPTS & ARCHIVES
Manuscripts and Archives advances teaching and research by making
primary source materials available for study and is open to the public.
For over five decades, the department has assembled more than 17,000
linear feet of manuscript collections, donated by individuals and
organizations, which document intellectual, legal social, religious,
political, diplomatic, and economic history, and the history of Yale
University. The department also houses the University archives and

RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Systems and Digital Resources Archivist, the
C&IS Support Specialist will maintain all departmental automated
systems and support the use of these systems by departmental staff, and
members of the public where appropriate. The systems include in-house
applications and commercial applications, including Paradox, Access,
MySQL, SQL Server and office productivity applications.
Maintains all departmental automated systems, and coordinates the use of
Library and other external systems. Acts as the department's Expert User,
and Webmaster, maintaining regular contact with workstation and web
support staff in ILTS. Serves as the department's network administrator,
and oversees the management of the department's networked resources
including those managed by the University's centralized Information
Technology Services on behalf of the department. Helps in coordinating
systems activity with other University departments. Coordinates the
training of staff members in the use of new and existing software
applications. Prepares training materials, and documentation for
departmental systems.
Acts as coordinating and supervisory manager of the department's
on-demand image scanning service; supervising a Library Services
Assistant I. Advises on the selection of departmental archival and
published resources that are appropriate candidates for digitization;
managing and keeping to project budgets and schedules these digitization
efforts. Helps to ensure that departmental digitization programs and
initiatives conform to professional and library standards, integrate well
with existing and emerging Library initiatives, and contribute to the
development and implementation of University and Library digitization
standards and capabilities.
Assists in the planning and implementation of new and modified
departmental automated systems, including databases, spreadsheets, the
departmental intranet, and on-line resources. Works with
departmental and Library staff to develop requirements and monitor
performance of vendors and products.
Helps to develop systems that enhance the efficiency of department
processes and its staff in their activities. Remains aware of
technological developments in hardware and software, and of
administrative changes in the department and the University that affect
existing departmental systems, assisting in recommending upgrades,
patches, equipment purchases and data migration strategies consistent
with Library and University polices. Participates, where
appropriate, in Library committees and other bodies to address the
planning, implementation and maintenance of systems and
workstations. May work closely with research staff in ILTS in the
development of such systems or services. Supervises students
assigned to systems related tasks within the department. Supports
the Systems and Digital Resources Archivist in the design, creation and
implementation of new systems, and in other activities involving systems
within the department.
QUALIFICATIONS
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree. One year of relevant experience or an equivalent
combination of education and experience. Knowledge of networking
protocols, Microsoft Windows, Unix, and database design.
Demonstrated knowledge of digitization standards and best practices for
images and textual materials. Preferred: Experience in
systems/application design and development. Knowledge of
programming languages, e.g. PHP, PERL, and increasingly, python.
Knowledge of digitization standards and best practices for audio and
video materials. Experience with XML and cultural heritage metadata
schemes such as METS and the TEI.
SKILLS AND ABLITILIES:
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated
ability to plan, manage, and coordinate complex projects.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with colleagues and
administrators. Preferred: Formal information systems
training. Possession of industry/product certification.
