Course Support Specialist Library Administrative Services Sterling Memorial Library THIS IS A FIXED-TERM POSITION Through December 31, 2007 Normal Work Schedule: Flexible within Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. –5:00 p.m. 20-37.5 hours per week, negotiable THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching and research at the University, has more than 11 million volumes housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and departmental libraries. Program description: As part of the ELI [Electronic Library Initiatives] Course Support project, the Library, Graduate School, Academic Media and Services, and other campus units collaboratively work in partnership with faculty to design or redesign undergraduate courses and assessment activities in support of the recommendations of the Committee on Yale College Education and in particular, on advancing collection-based learning and use of instructional technologies. To further this collaborative initiative, a three-year grant was received from the Davis Educational Foundation established by Stanton and Elisabeth Davis after his retirement as chairman of Shaw’s Supermarkets, Inc. Information about the program may be found online at: http://www.library.yale.edu/eli/ Position responsibilities: This grant funds a professional position committed to using library collections in undergraduate teaching, familiar with effective applications of technology in instruction, and skilled in collaboratively working with faculty and experts from different disciplines and service units. Reporting to and working closely with the Associate University Librarian for public services, the Course Support Specialist will also work closely with the Director of Graduate Teaching, the ELI Project Manager, and others to provide direct consultation to faculty and graduate student instructors and colleagues across campus on teaching and learning issues, the undergraduate curriculum goals, and the potential use of the rich material collections in the Yale Library, museums and galleries. Consultation will be offered through work on service teams of experts supporting specific faculty and courses, assistance in conducting interviews with faculty, and work with librarians and curators to design and assess effective guides to promote research skills, discovery of library and other collections, and evaluation of information resources. The incumbent will lead the development and assessment of print and web-based materials to record teaching techniques, curriculum materials, information tools, tutorials and other resources developed for courses supported by the grant but available for other teaching applications. Professional development for faculty and library staff is one of the objectives of the grant and the ELI program; responsibilities will include participating in, developing, and leading various development sessions related to issues of pedagogy, instructional technology, and discovery and evaluation of collections and information resources. Qualifications: Required: An advanced graduate degree, preferably an MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution. Evidence of familiarity with challenges of pedagogy of liberal arts education; exceptional teaching and consulting skills; strong listening, written and oral communication skills; and strong familiarity with use of primary source materials and library collections. Excellent analytical skills and evidence of successful work in a collaborative environment involving diverse levels of technical and subject expertise. Strong commitment to the advancement of teaching in higher education and to providing supportive course services. Preferred: Experience teaching undergraduate students information research skills and in at least one subject discipline. Experience or advanced coursework in providing reference services utilizing a broad knowledge of print and online information sources. Experience developing and delivering professional development programs. Evidence of leading a team-based initiative involving staff from different professional backgrounds. Evidence of understanding applications of instructional design and instructional technologies.
