METADATA TASK GROUP

The Library Systems Steering Committee charges the committee to pursue the following three areas of investigation and other key issues which may emerge in the course of its work and to recommend specific action in support of the three-year Imaging America project.

1. Metadata

• Develop and maintain expertise in emerging national and international metadata standards associated with digital image and digital library collections. Become a campus resource on metadata issues pertaining to such collections.
• Establish and implement a common set of data elements for digital objects at Yale to ensure the ready exchange of records, while maintaining autonomy and flexibility in different systems dedicated to specialized functions. Clarify the relationship of new metadata records to traditional library cataloging records such as those in Orbis.
• Consider requirements for bibliographic, structural, and administrative metadata in Yale's digital image collections. Evaluate existing standardsfor their applicability.
• Specifically, by November 30, 1998, adopt a metadata standard which will support the requirements of the three-year, 25,000-record Imaging America Project.
