Common Buttons Interpretation

Yale University Library

23 July 1999

The following buttons are common to most of the CrossPlex ORBIS screens. Interpret these buttons as follows:
BUTTON NOTIS COMMAND
General instructionsFor button labels, upshift the first letter of each word, e.g., "Start Over," and not "Start over," or "START OVER," etc.

SUBMITSend (Enter) in NOTIS
CLEARClears the Search Window and resets options back to the default. For example, on the START menu the radio buttons will be reset, on the guide and index screens the search type window will return to Choose Search.
BACKIssues the NOTIS F7 (BACk) command from GUIDE, INDEX and Course Reserve Index screens. Issues the NOTIS F5 (PREvious) command from the Brief View, Long View, and Course Reserve View Detail screens. NOTE: Our design specifies that F7 (BACk) and F5 (PREvious) are both displayed as a BACK button. If it's easier to maintain the distinction between BACk and PREVious by using buttons with different labels, then use button Label = "Back" and button label = "Previous Record."

The BACK button is an option only when F7 (BACk) or F5 (PREvious) are options on the corresponding NOTIS screen.

FORWARDIssues the NOTIS F8 (FORward) command from GUIDE, INDEX and Course Reserve Index screens. Issues the NOTIS F6 (NEXt) command from the Brief View, Long View, and Course Reserve View Detail screens. NOTE: Our design specifies that F8 (FORward) and F6 (NEXt) are both displayed as a FORWARD button. If it's easier to maintain the distinction between FORward and NEXt by using buttons with different labels, then use button Label = "Forward" and button label = "Next Record."

The FORWARD button is an option only when F8 (FORward) or F6 (NEXt) are options on the corresponding NOTIS screen.

SEARCH HISTORYIssues the NOTIS REV command to invoke the Review Search List screen.
GUIDEIssues the NOTIS GUI command to return to the last Guide screen. The GUIDE button is made available only when the NOTIS GUIde option is displayed on the corresponding NOTIS screen.
INDEX and INDEX BUTTON NUMBER WINDOWIn Course Reserves, index is presented as a single INDEX button. On all other pages, index is presented as an INDEX button paired with an INDEX BUTTON NUMBER window.

The INDEX button alone (Course Reserves) issues the NOTIS IND command. The INDEX button plus INDEX BUTTON NUMBER window issues the IND ## command (where ## = a number between 1-9999).

The INDEX button number window fills in automatically.

  1. When displaying an index or guide screen it is the number of the first index/guide entry displayed. For example, if looking at entries 34-41, the index button number is 34.
  2. On a brief or long view screen, the index button number window is the record number. For example, if looking at record 41 of 306 Entries Found, the index button number is 41.

The INDEX button plus INDEX BUTTON NUMBER window (and the Course Reserve INDEX button) are available only when the NOTIS INDex option is displayed on the corresponding NOTIS screen

START OVERIssues the NOTIS STA command which clears the Review Search List and returns to the Introduction screen. The corresponding CrossPlex ORBIS screen is the Start menu. In Course Reserve, the Start Over button issues the NOTIS SEA command which returns to the Course Reserve Search Screen.
BRIEF VIEWIssues the NOTIS BRI command to display the Brief View of a record.
LONG VIEWIssues the NOTIS LON command to display the Long View of a record.
