Catalog Department Mission (May 2005)
To support the teaching and research mission of the university, by providing seamless integrated access to all scholarly materials held or licensed by Yale, regardless of format, script or language; to develop and implement best practices in metadata creation, record management, and cataloging standards; to maintain a leadership role in national and international associations and programs, finding ways to increase efficiency through sharing of resources and expertise.
Assumptions about collections and services delivered by the Library over the next 1-5 years.
· Print resources will continue to be acquired a levels similar to current levels, though there may be a small decline in western resources. It is expected that the acquisition of materials acquired from other parts of the world will continue to increase.
Vision for the Catalog Department for the next 1-5 years.
· Continues to create traditional AACR2 MARC cataloging for print and non-print resources
· Creates non-AACR, non-MARC metadata for a wide-range of digital assets
How to transform the Catalog Department
Identify and implement workflow and process efficiencies that will help the Catalog Department be more effective and make staff resources available for the cataloging of digital assets.

We foster and encourage continuous improvement to cataloging and metadata standards and technology. We cultivate expertise and enthusiasm among staff, enabling them to meet the professional, technological, and organizational challenges of the future.
