Monday, August 11, 1997 ... Dawn of a New Machine!

What's happening?

On August 8, 1997, the Library will 'cut-over' to a new mainframe (box) that will run Orbis. This new mainframe will be quicker and smarter than the old one, and will also be 'year 2,000 compliant'. Public Orbis sessions will run as normal on the morning of Monday, August 11. However, all staff OrbSrch and OrbEdit session configurations must be changed!

What do I (the Expert User) have to do?

You need to edit your McGill .ini file (the net3270.ini file) *and the McGill .ini files for all staff in your unit/department* and change the location that it points to for OrbSrch. Before August 8, OrbSrch could be found at the location 'yalemis.cis.yale.edu', after August 8, OrbSrch will be located at 'mvsorbis.library.yale.edu'.

For OrbEdit sessions, you need to add a 'Tab' to the beginning of the Autoconn macro. (The Autoconn macro is what gives each user their fixed Orbis ID.)

You will also need to change the location that the net3270.ini file points to for OrbEdit! Before August 8, OrbEdit could be found at '130.132.21.134' after August 8 it can be found at 'yul.cis.yale.edu'.

How do I make the change?

Make sure all McGill Sessions are closed before you begin editing the net3270.ini file!!

** Make a backup of the file before you make any changes!**

  • Choose File / Run from the Program Manager Screen, or from the NT Start menu.
  • Type in net3270.ini, click OK.
  • Choose File / Save As from the Menu Bar. Type in net3270.804 as the file name.
  • Choose File / Exit and Exit out of this document.

    ** Edit your net3270.ini file and make the appropriate changes.**

  • Choose File / Run from the Program Manager Screen, or from the NT Start menu.
  • Type in net3270.ini, click OK.
  • Locate the lines that look like this:

    [ORBSRCH]
    Toolbar=On
    Host Transfer Program=IND$FILE
    Session Name=OrbSrch
    Gateway Name=YALEMIS.CIS.YALE.EDU

  • Change the Gateway Name=YALEMIS.CIS.YALE.EDU to say Gateway Name=MVSORBIS.LIBRARY.YALE.EDU

    The lines should now look like this:

    [ORBSRCH]
    Toolbar=On
    Host Transfer Program=IND$FILE
    Session Name=OrbSrch
    Gateway Name=MVSORBIS.LIBRARY.YALE.EDU

    Any session that used to point to YALEMIS.CIS.YALE.EDU must be changed to point to MVSORBIS.LIBRARY.YALE.EDU.

    Now find the line that looks like this:

    autoconn=-"MCGLxxx" Tab "MCGILLU" Newline "ORBIS" Enter Clear "CSSN" Enter

    Change it to add a Tab and a space before the "MCGLxxx":

    autoconn=-Tab "MCGLxxx" Tab "MCGILLU" Newline "ORBIS" Enter Clear "CSSN" Enter

    There must be a (-) dash before the Tab and a space between the word Tab and MCGLXXX. Do not change any other information on this line except to add the Tab.

  • Locate the lines that look like this:

    [ORBEDIT] This line may read ORBYUL!!
    Toolbar=On
    Host Transfer Program=IND$FILE
    Session Name=OrbEdit
    Gateway Name=130.132.21.134

  • Change the Gateway Name=130.132.21.134 to say Gateway Name=YUL.CIS.YALE.EDU

    The lines should now look like this:

    [ORBEDIT]
    Toolbar=On
    Host Transfer Program=IND$FILE
    Session Name=OrbEdit
    Gateway Name=YUL.CIS.YALE.EDU

  • Click on File, Exit and save the .ini file

    You are done (now go do the rest of the machines in your unit)!
