Blackwell Publishing Opens Shanghai Office to Support Growth in Asia
35 institutes within Chinese Academy of Sciences have access to
publisher's journal collection
Shanghai, China - August 31, 2004 - Earlier this month Blackwell
Publishing opened a representative office in China to support its
publishing activities in the region. The office is located at 555
Nanjing Road West, Shanghai. Local staff based in Shanghai and Beijing
will manage relationships with academic institutes, societies,
libraries, and pharmaceutical companies, and will further develop
Blackwell Publishing's business in China.
"The opening of Blackwell's new office in Shanghai, China's commercial
and pharmaceutical industry capital, is evidence of our commitment to
building strong relationships with our publishing partners and the
scholarly community at large." said Mark Robertson, President of
Blackwell Publishing Asia.
In a parallel agreement with the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Blackwell
Publishing will provide access to its science and medicine collection
to 35 institutes within the Academy through the Chinese National
Science Digital Library. The Academy has over 30,000 graduate students
in its 108 member institutes and is the only learned academy within
China to be funded directly by the Central Government. Blackwell aims
to provide access to its science and medical journals to additional
member institutes in 2005. The company also publishes a number of the
Academy's English-language journals.
In a move to ensure quicker access to its journals online in China,
Blackwell journals will soon be available through CERNET (China
Education and Research Network) to the university and research
membership of CALIS (China Academic Library and Information System)
