Re: NIH as publisher

NIH has been a publisher (through the National Library of Medicine)  for
very many years - Index Medicus (in various forms) has a pedigree as long
as that of Chemical Abstracts.  In its latest incarnation, PubMed, it is a
mainstay of medical research across the world.  Another part of NLM, the
National Center for Biotechnology Information, has for many years
maintained GenBank, a leading repository for sequence data.  And Chemical
Abstracts seemed quite happy a few years back to take advantage of its
availability by adding all GenBank records to its Registry file.

PubChem is just a natural extension of existing NLM work, not a new
departure.
