Chicago Journals announce in perpetuity access option
In response to feedback from the scholarly and library
communities, the University of Chicago Press Journals Division
announced today that it plans to introduce additional
post-cancellation options for all electronic journals published
by the University of Chicago Press and accessed through the
University of Chicago Press Journals Division Web site,
www.journals.uchicago.edu.
The University of Chicago Press recognizes that in perpetuity
access to journal content is a concern for our library customers.
We encourage clients to maintain active subscriptions to
University of Chicago Press titles, which ensures unfettered
access not only to the latest issues of a journal, but also to
all archive content maintained on the University of Chicago Press
Web site. The online editions hosted at www.journals.uchicago.edu
contain supplementary information not available in the print
version of the journal or on aggregated databases, including
expanded methods, data sets, and video files.
Beginning in fall 2007, institutions and individuals who choose
not to renew their electronic subscriptions to journals published
by the University of Chicago Press may retain access to issues
published during their subscription term for a small annual
maintenance fee, which covers the technological and service costs
of hosting the journal. Customers are automatically waived any
annual maintenance fee to access electronic versions of both
current and archived journal content when a subscription to a
journal title is kept active.
Effective immediately, subscribers and post-cancellation
subscribers may also opt to purchase a digital copy for local
storage and retrieval of any issues to which they subscribed as
an additional archival safeguard. The digital copy purchase price
is set as low as possible and is intended to cover the costs of
materials, labor, and shipping. For more information or
purchasing specifics, please contact our Customer Service team at
subscriptions@press.uchicago.edu or toll-free (877) 705-1878.
