ALA Annual Conference Program:

Media Literacy, Artistic Expression, and Copyright Sunday, June 
29, 10:30 - 12:00 am.  Disneyland Hotel in the Magic Kingdom Room

Digital Media Studios, Knowledge Creation Labs, Media Design 
Studios are becoming common spaces in academic libraries. 
Expand your knowledge of copyright issues surrounding the 
creative use of media.  The following panel will address the 
serious issues Librarians face concerning the use of media.

Dr. Renee Hobbs, professor of communication at Temple 
University's School of Communications and Theater is one of the 
nation's leading authorities on media literacy education.  Dr. 
Hobbs will discuss current user practices with digital media, 
particularly those that are relevant to educators who aim to 
teach critical thinking and communication skills using mass media 
and popular culture.  She will discuss how copyright and fair use 
affects the work of these educators.

Marybeth Peters, United States Registrar of Copyrights and 
director of the U.S. Copyright Office will discuss the tension 
between the existing law and user expectations.  She will also 
speak to the importance of copyright in this context, including 
next steps and the role of the copyright office.

Mary Rasenberger, currently an Attorney at Morrison and Foerster 
in NYC and recently Senior Policy Advisor for Public Policy and 
Programs in the Office of Strategic Initiatives of the Library of 
Congress.  Mary will talk about how to deal with copyright 
conflicts from a practical perspective, i.e. how new technologies 
can be taken advantage of in academic settings without 
compromising copyright.
