Orbis Monthly Record
Load Statistics
Statistics for our record loads are logged monthly in the Excel spreadsheets linked below. They begin May 2004 and are updated at the end of each month.
LC Resource Statistics 2004
On a weekly basis, usually Mondays or Tuesdays, we update our local Library of Congress database (LCDB) with bibliographic records of books, serials, and non-books, along with name and subject authority records. The above link contains a table showing a breakdown of our monthly Library of Congress load activity. MARS Statistics 2004
Each month, usually around the 15th, MARS sends us name, subject, and series authority records that have changed. We load these updated records to our database overlaying the obsolete records. Statistics for these records are shown in the above link under Monthly Updates.
On a regular basis, we send MARC records for e-resources to MARS for authority control processing. Examples include Serial Solutions, eEbrary, IEEE, and Oxford University Press. MARS corrects the headings in these records and returns them to us along with a file of relevant new authority records. Statistics for these records are shown in the above link as Electronic Resource records.
Each week we export from Orbis all the records marked for MARS processing in ExportQ. MARS corrects the headings in these records and the following week returns them to us along with a file of relevant new authority records. We usually load these bibliographic and authority records on Wednesday or Thursday. Statistics for these loads are shown as Current Cataloging records in the above link.
Embedded Order Data Statistics 2004
On a weekly basis, usually on Mondays and Tuesdays, Acquisitions sends us e-mail notifications and MARC record files for titles received on our approval plans with five different vendors. We load these files to create bibliographic, holdings, and purchase order records. The above link contains a table showing the monthly totals of records that we process from our vendors.
We load three kinds of GPO records loads, Shipping, Titles, and Changes.
On a weekly basis, usually on Thursdays, MARCIVE sends us a file of GPO Shipping List records. We load these into our database as suppressed bibliographic and holdings records. After government documents staff receives the items, they unsuppress the bibliographic and holdings records and add items records. The above link contains a table showing the monthly totals of Shipping List records that we process.
Each month, MARCIVE sends us GPO Titles records. These are full bibliographic records that correspond to Shipping List records. We load two kinds of Titles records, GPO ONLINE and GPO OTHER. When we load GPO ONLINE Titles, we create new records representing online resources. GPO OTHER records require special processing. We load each of these records twice, once to create new holdings, and a second time to suppress bibliographic and holdings records. We then send bibliographic IDs to government documents staff to unsuppress the records if required.
Changes records are Titles records that have been modified
and are loaded to overlay our existing Titles records. Three kinds of these records exist, Changes
Online, Changes Other, and Changes No Longer Available.
The above link contains a table showing the monthly totals of GPO Shipping, Titles, and Changes records processed.
E-resource Statistics 2004
Periodically, we load bibliographic and authority records for electronic resources, such as Serial Solutions and Ebrary. As determined by the Cataloging department, some of these files of MARC bibliographic records are sent first to MARS for authority control processing. The above link contains a table showing the monthly totals of e-resource records that we have loaded.
