Added Copies
POLICY
Copies added to an existing Orbis
bibliographic record on the Copy Holdings Record must conform to the
following standards and definitions.
STANDARDS FOR EXACT COPIES:
- Standard numbers (LCCN and/or ISBN) are the same.
- Edition statement is the same.
- Place of publication, name of publisher is the same.
- Date of publication [i.e. generally the copyright date] is the same.
- Extent of item [pages or volumes] is the same.
STANDARDS FOR VARIANT COPIES:
- Variations in printing dates are ignored when the
copyright date remains the same and there is no evidence that the
copy represents another edition.
- Minor changes in size
- Edition statements in foreign language publications when
the statement represents a printing rather than a new publication.
- Variations in place of publication when the publisher remains the
same [i.e. Harmondsworth, Eng. : Penguin Books and Baltimore, Md. :
Penguin Books]
- Minor variations in the name of publisher, when the place of
publication remains the same [i.e. Harcourt, Brace and Harcourt Brace
Jovanovich]
- Addition of a second place of publication and second publisher.
- The following types of copies may also be considered as variant
added copies:
- Photocopies
- Paperback/paper bound copies
SPECIAL SITUATIONS FOR VARIANT COPIES OF MULTIPART
MONOGRAPHS:
- The addition or change of publisher during the course of publication
- Volumes replaced by photocopies
- Volumes replaced by reprint editions
- Multipart monograph set consists of varying editions, publishers,
etc.
GUIDELINES FOR ADDED VARIANT COPIES:
Any variations given above, if deemed to be significant by the
cataloger, should be noted in the NOTES field of the Copy Holdings
Record for the particular copy, or on the bibliographic record.
Notes given on the bibliographic record must be placed in field 590
with the primary Orbis location code preceding the text.
Under no circumstances is the bibliographic description (fields 2xx
through 4xx) to be changed.
