Cataloging and catalog maintenance policies for the Orbis database are based upon the principle of encouraging all cataloging units to contribute to the consistency and data integrity of Orbis. This manual includes both policies and procedures which we hope will assist staff in achieving this goal.
Policies set forth in this section and in succeeding separate chapters are mandatory for all staff to observe. Procedures may or may not always be mandatory, depending upon the task or function. In general, procedures which involve the transfer of data from one database to another and from one file to another must be strictly followed.
This manual will only be effective if all cataloging staff use it and if they actively suggest improvements to its content. Questions, problems, and requests for clarification should be sent to the Chief Cataloging Librarian or to members of the Catalog Working Group.
