CREATING BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORDS USING ORBIS PROVISIONAL RECORDS
POLICY
Full bibliographic records created from Orbis
provisional records must conform to standards as given in the policy
statement STANDARDS FOR BIBLIOGRAPHIC RECORDS in the opening paragraph
of Section I.
Responsibility for the description, content designation, choice and form of access points belongs to the cataloger completing the record. All data given in the Provisional record must be examined for completeness and accuracy and corrected/modified according cataloging standards.
GUIDELINES:
Verify all data in the provisional bibliographic record for accuracy and completeness. Do not accept any data without verification.
To make any changes in the record see the section of this manual titled Editing the Bibliographic Record.
Add/correct all MARC content designators
Add all additional variable data fields at the end of the record in a continuous string following standard input conventions described in the section of this manual titled Creating an Original Record.
NOTE: The order of fields is system supplied; the sequence of fields within a field group is determined by the cataloger.
Create any local fields, as required, for area tracings, location, etc.
Review the completed record both before and after entering all data.
NOTE: The display LONG should be used to identify spacing and formatting errors.
